Instrument Pilot Course ![]() An Instrument rating is added to your Private or Commercial Pilot Certificate. A new certificate will be sent to you by the FAA upon satisfactory completion of your training program, a written test and a flight test. Your new license will be identical to your Private or Commercial Pilot Certificate except that it will have the words "Instrument-Airplane" typed under the ratings section. There is no minimum age for taking lessons, but you must pass an FAA physical and be at least 16 years of age to solo an airplane, and you must be 17 years of age to get a Private License. This rating permits you to fly "by reference to instruments", through clouds, and certain other visibility restricting situations. You must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate and a current 3rd class medical to start Instrument training. You will need 10 hours of oral instruction and 40 hours of IFR flight training, including 15 hours of dual instruction (25 additional practice hours may be done with a safety pilot but is most typically done with an instructor; a safety pilot is someone who is current in the aircraft being flown and acts as an observer by watching out for other aircraft while you fly). You will need to have acquired 125 hours of total flight time including 50 hours of PIC (Pilot in Command) cross country time to obtain your Instrument rating. The cost for IFR training will run approximately $5,000.00 to $5,500.00, depending on how much dual is used and the length of time taken for your training. Most individuals training will spend around 45-50 hours of total flight time and 40 hours of instruction time. Most customers approach their training on a pay as you fly approach in a manner that works best with their own time schedules. This can be flying multiple times a week or once every other week, whatever will work best for your own needs and schedule availability
