Alternate Airport Requirements

123 Rule - If from 1 hour before to 1 hour after your ETA at the destination airport, the weather is forecast to be at least 2,000 ft ceilings or 3 miles visibility, no alternate is required. If the predicted weather does not meet this requirement, an alternate is to be filed according to the following criteria:

If no IAP is published for the destination airport, an alternate airport is required.

If an IAP is published for the alternate airport, the airport may be filed as an alternate airport according to the minimums specified in that procedure or,

If no alternate airport minimums are specified for the airport desired, the following requirements should be used:

   A.Precision approach procedure: ceiling 600 ft and 2 statute miles visibility;

   Nonprecision approaches: ceiling 800 feet and 2 statute miles visibility.

If no IAP is published for the alternate airport, basic VFR weather minimums must be available to allow decent from the MEA in order to use it as a legal alternate airport.
