FAA Endorsements In Detail

The endorsements provided here are provided as a combination of FAA reference guidance for most areas of endorsement that instructors provide.  The endorsements provided are derived from a combination of sources, primarily Advisory Circular (AC) 61.65E but also come from a variety of other FAA guidance documents and the FAR’s themselves.  In some cases, the endorsements provided here have been modified from those provided in AC 61.65E.  They have been modified to include greater detail in the endorsement areas of training covered and required for the endorsement, rating, or certificate.

This listing also includes some endorsements that are not included AC 61.65E but are required by FAR.  These are the prerequisites for practical test endorsements per FAR 61.39(a) that are required for all practical tests.  These have been broken into two separate endorsements to provide clarity in the endorsement.  Additionally, it is entirely possible for a separate instructor to sign off the two areas of endorsement this area of requirement.

The intent of this document is to provide endorsements that are clear and comprehensive and will guarantee that when you endorse an individual for a checkride, written test, or other area that the endorsement will cover all possible areas needed and will not be rejected when presented to an FAA official or Designated Pilot Examiner at the time the endorsement is evaluated.  Please rest assured we have done everything we can to make the endorsements listed the most thorough we can and most appropriate.  I would challenge an examiner or FSDO official to fin incomplete endorsements listed in this document.  If found, I would welcome and corrections or additions from either if they are possible.

This is not a complete listing of all possible endorsements.  Some have not been listed for the simple reason that there is no common practical use for them that most instructors will ever encounter.  While this is the case, it should provide a very thorough listing of the endorsements you will encounter.

Usage Notes:

  • Areas that are listed in italics indicate that the instructor completing the endorsement should choose the appropriate input for the section.

  • Different ratings have different numbers of endorsements that may be required.  I have included al the necessary endorsements for each practical test that is detailed in this document.

  • Some endorsements in this document can be combined, bit is not a practice I recommend.  By separating each endorsement it increases the clarity of the endorsement and eliminates some of the potential for omission of a required endorsement.
