IFR Emergencies and ATC

At some time in your career as a pilot, you may experience radio communications failure. If this happens, there are specific procedures that you should follow.

These are set forth in FAR part 91.185. Following these rules will offer you the best chance to land safely and without too much to ATC.

In the event of two-way communications failure first squawk 7600 on your transponder. If this is in VFR conditions, then continue in VFR and land as soon as practical. If in IFR conditions, do as follows (in order):

Route:
A ssigned: Last Assigned by ATC.
V ectored: Last Vector given by ATC.
E xpected: Last told to expect by ATC.
F iled: As filed in the flight plan.

Altitude:
M inimum: Minimum clearance altitude as charted E xpected:
E xpected altitude given by ATC.A ssigned:
A ltitude assigned by ATC.
(Use the highest of these three altitudes, ATC will expect you to.)
