Pitot-Static Instrument Errors

If the Static Port of Pitot Tube ever become obstructed (ex. ice while flying in clouds) the instruments will react differently depending on which is clogged.

Pitot Hole Blocked: The airspeed will drop to zero; air will then bleed out of the drain hole in the back.

Pitot Tube Total Blockage: The airspeed indicator will react in the same manner as the altimeter. An increase in altitude will result in an increase of indicated airspeed.

Static Port Blocked: The altimeter will freeze at the altitude where the blockage occurred. The VSI will read zero, and the airspeed indicator will now react opposite the altimeter. If you ascent the airspeed will read lower because of lower air pressure and if you descend it will read higher because of higher air density.

Alternate Static Source: When using the alternate static source airspeed will be slightly faster, altimeter will read higher, and the VSI will show a slight climb.
